For small and medium websites, Google usually has no problem crawling every page. However, for large websites—those with thousands or even millions of pages—Google has to manage its resources. This limited resource is known as Crawl Budget.

Crawl Budget is the number of URLs Googlebot is willing to crawl on your site within a given time frame. If you waste this budget on low-value pages (like old filtered search results, duplicate content, or policy documents), your high-value pages (new products, major service pages, crucial blog posts) may take weeks or even months to be discovered and indexed.

Crawl Budget Optimisation is the process of efficiently steering Googlebot to your most profitable content. This guide provides a professional, step-by-step framework to manage and maximise your crawl budget effectively.

Step 1: Analyse Your Current Crawl Status

Before you can fix the problem, you need to understand where Googlebot is currently spending its time.

 

A. Review Crawl Stats in GSC

 

Go to the Settings area in Google Search Console (GSC) and find the Crawl Stats report.

  • Look For: The average number of pages crawled per day. If this number is static or declining, or if the time spent downloading a page is high, you have a Crawl Budget issue.

  • Identify Waste: Look at the ‘Response’ breakdown. Are many of the crawled pages returning a 404 (Not Found) or a 301/302 (Redirect)? These are major wastes of budget.

 

B. Audit Low-Value Content

  • Remove Waste: Remove all noindex pages, 404 pages, 301 redirects, and low-priority archive pages from your sitemap immediately.

  • Freshness: Ensure your sitemaps are updated regularly and resubmit them via GSC after any major site change or content refresh.

Step 4: Improve Site Architecture and Internal Linking

Crawl Budget is heavily influenced by how quickly Googlebot can move around your site, which is dictated by your architecture.

 

A. Reduce Crawl Depth

 

The most important pages (your revenue-generating pages) should be reachable in three or fewer clicks from the homepage. If a key page is buried deep (e.g., 8+ clicks), Google may not crawl it frequently enough.

 

B. Internal Linking Prioritisation

 

As discussed in Blog Post #1, use strong internal links from your high-authority pages to point directly towards your key commercial and Pillar pages. Googlebot follows the authority and link structure you create, so use this to guide the crawl path.
